In our new blog, the owners of the impressive stone built, detached barn conversion in Linthwaite — which is new to market and available for viewings — details their journey of purchasing the property back in 2007.
We still remember coming to view this house 15 years ago - it was love at first sight. There were so many outstanding features, we couldn't take them all in. Staying in rental accommodation at the time, we had a strict checklist of factors we wanted in our new property.
We had seen dozens of houses up to that point, and none quite matched all the criteria. We simply set foot in this house and were blown away, with every box ticked, and then some!
From the stunning exterior and spectacular fireplace — a real centrepiece to the house — to the panoramic views of Colne Valley and the quaintest country lane it sits on. We knew we had found the perfect home.
The property was built around the 1800s as a farmhouse, with a barn next door to accommodate the animals. The barn was converted to the living room and extra bedrooms many years before us, with an additional double garage. During our time here, we have completely renovated the property — exposing all the original beams and brick work throughout — making sure we modernised certain elements, while retaining original features. We invested in a bespoke kitchen only six years ago and updated all the windows just last year.
We’d like to describe it as a real family home — spacious rooms, really well laid out, six bedrooms, a double garage, an open kitchen and dining room, plus a large living room which leads onto the veranda. We’ve spent many spring and summer evenings sitting together out there, talking, listening to music, and taking in the changing views as the sun sets over the hills.
Our hamlet also has a real sense of community and one of the most special things about living here has to be our neighbours. In addition, we often walk to the Bull’s Head — a gem of a pub just at the end of our lane — for a drink or two.
When it comes to walks or cycling, we’re really spoilt for choice — and frequently visit Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, Dean Wood, or Folly Dolly Falls. We also love that we're within walking distance — or short driving distance — of most things such as the Doctors’, schools, shops, the M62, Huddersfield town centre, yet we have still retained that rural feel.
We’re a short stroll from the beautiful village of Slaithwaite, regarded by many as one of the most sought-after Yorkshire postcodes to live in. There are a numerous nice shops, lovely pubs, and great restaurants. We spend many Saturdays there — walking along the canal and stopping off for a bite to eat at one of the many establishments. When we want to go shopping, we simply jump on the train at Slaithwaite station for a direct route to Manchester or Leeds.
We never thought we would move from here and always believed this to be our forever home. We have even had visits from architects to discuss plans to extend above the garage, add a second living room, and extend the veranda. I guess we will have to leave this development for the next inhabitants to consider!
We will miss so much about living here. But circumstances change and after a long family chat — and a well thought out process — we have decided to continue our next chapter elsewhere.
We wish the next owners the best of luck in this beautiful and memorable property.
